Tibetan farmers in Karnataka received Rs 347 Lakhs as drought relief

Bangalore 22 Sept: Karnataka Government had declared drought in most its districts for 2012 monsoon. Subsequently, the Government sanctioned drought relief of upto Rs. 25,000 to each family in the form of crop loan waiver. The government also gave interest subsidy and crop insurance waiver to farmers in Karnataka as drought relief through its cooperative societies. Share members of Tibetan cooperative societies received the said benefits like Indian cooperatives operating in Karnataka.

A total sum of Rs 347 lakhs was sanctioned for members of five Tibetan cooperatives in Karnataka as follow.

Mundgod Tibetan cooperative received Rs 115 lakhs, Kollegal Tibetan cooperative received Rs 108 lakhs; TDL Bylakuppe Tibetan cooperative received Rs 60 lakhs, Lugsam Bylakuppe Tibetan cooperative received Rs 31 lakhs and Hunsur Tibetan Cooperative received Rs 33 lakh.

Loan waiver and interest subsidy amount received by the societies are given to its share members who are farmers. The amount is disbursed to farmers on the basis of quantum of loan taken by the farmers from the society for seeds, manure, fertilizer and tractor services.

On 19th September 2014, FTCI CEO Mr. Tashi Wangdu called on Shri Mahadeva Prasad, Minister of Cooperation, Government of Karnataka at latter’s office and thanked him for supporting Tibetan farmers. Mr. Karma, a farmer from Bylakuppe settlement said, “I want to thank the Government of Karnataka for giving drought relief through the Cooperative society”.

Five Tibetan Cooperatives in Karnataka gives more than 300 lakhs crop loan every year to over 2500 Tibetan farmers at low interest.
